Where is the Asian representation in the top 10 wedding dresses of the year? (December 2022)

Our MP’s wife, Carrie Johnson’s wedding dress got voted into the top ten wedding dresses of the year by Google. A beautiful white cottage-core dress with flared sleeves made Boris Johnson’s new wife look like a fairy princess in the late Spring of ‘21.  White wedding dresses are generally elegant and simplistic. The style was set by English royalty. Phillipa of England was the first to wear a white wedding dress in 1406. The tradition still carries on today but many brides now gravitate towards the unconventional look.

Carrie’s own wedding dress was designed by Christos Costarellos, a Greek designer who found his inspiration for the dress in Greek mythology. The embroidered gown quickly became viral on all media thanks to a video of Boris and Carrie Johnson during their first dance. The wedding itself was private as it was in the midst of the pandemic and in accordance with the Covid-19 rules.

Atypical wedding dresses have become a major part of the fashion industry by giving designers the creative freedom to experiment with traditional and modern styles.

The fashion industry is huge and has many different styles with history and culture in each new look. While Google may have chosen all white wedding dresses, many cultures wear much more colour than this. However, this is not shown in the ‘Best dressed brides of 2022 according to Google’. In fact, not only does it ignore non traditional western style wedding dresses but every culture and religion with other wedding dress styles.

The stunning white traditional bridal dress Carrie Johnson wore may be worthy of the top 10 wedding dresses of the year, but they neglect the beauty of Asian/ Indian bridal wear and all other cultures of bridal wear. From gorgeous attire that goes aeons back in the conventional colours of red, white and gold to sparkling and heavenly modern outfits, Indian bridal wear never misses.

And yet, with as many famous and well known Indians as there are who have recently gotten married, there is no representation for them within the top 10. The failure to realise that cultured and alternative style wedding dresses are taking over bridal fashion is huge. White wedding dresses have their own history but to ignore every other culture is disgusting. Especially when they have such rich histories in fashion that are full of colour.

This top 10 list even has the dress Kylie Jenner wore to the Met Gala in honour of the late Virgil Abloh. While honouring the late fashion designer is nice, the dress itself does not deserve 2nd place in the top 10 wedding dresses of the year. For starters, it is fashioned with a white cap and the top of the dress looks like a mesh t-shirt. The ridiculousness of this dress let alone the rating it received in this list is insane.

Fashion is controversial and while it may be acceptable as a dress for the Met Gala, it looks preposterous in comparison to the Nicola Peltz wedding dress which came first. And then comparing it to unconventional or other culture’s wedding dresses, it doesn’t even come close.

Thankfully, Bridal Fashion Week covered the Fall 2022 fashion and did include very distinctive wedding outfits, including suits and different colours and styles. However, it still lacks culture. Asian wedding attire often makes a bride go from gorgeous to goddess with outfits dripped in gold.

It is a tragedy that other cultures are not represented in these supposed top 10 wedding dresses of 2022.

The fashion world still has much to learn from styles around the world.
