DIY Kings and Queens, get ready because it is your time to shine!
With the spooky season just on the horizon, there are many ways to get your Halloween costume just perfect without spending much at all.
Take your classic Harley Quinn. Don’t have red and blue shorts? Or the “Daddy’s lil monster” shirt? No problem. The original Harley Quinn outfit is a red and black jumpsuit. Of course you creatives can even use red and blue for this DIY outfit. If you have a plain black top or vest and a similar red one that you don’t wear very often, cut them up. Vertically cut both down the middle and sew the back of both tops together. The front can be attached together by safety pins for that chaotic Harley look. Any black or blue jean shorts can go with it and there you have it; a Harley Quinn costume. The most important part of a Halloween costume is always the makeup, especially for Harley.
With your hair in high pigtails and the word ‘Rotten’ written on your jaw, you have successfully DIY’ed Harley Quinn. You could even do your eyeshadow with one eyelid red and the other black or blue. A little smudge with red lipstick around your mouth and you're ready to rock Halloween with minimal cost.
For you Marvel fanatics, do not fret because it is still too easy to have the perfect costume! For my female Loki lovers, it’s as easy as finding a green robe, sheet or blanket and arranging it on yourself with safety pins. Fasten the robe with a thick black belt or corset and either make the horns out of cardboard or buy them. For men, even easier. Use your green blanket or robe as a cloak over a black outfit of your choice and slick your air back. Again for the horns it is completely optional, buy them or make them out of paper.
Geeky Greeks, it's your turn! With no specific costume to go buy, it's even easier to make yourself into a DIY Greek God. Typical Greek costumes only need a white bedsheet and some gold jewellery or rope/ belts to complete it. If you want to challenge yourself a bit more, try Medusa. In many stories, a villain. But for some women, she is an absolute icon. This particular story is dark and twisted as many Greek tales are, but long story short, Medusa was beautiful and suffered for it greatly. She turned to the Goddess Athena for help but Athena did not see it that way and felt disrespected that her disciple had been ruined on her altar. As punishment, she made Medusa as you all know her today. Still beautiful but terrifying so much that anyone who dares even look at her turns to stone.
For this look, makeup is key. Stunning girlies, curl your hair and make it big like in the 80’s. Snakes are most commonly known for Medusa's hair but to keep it simple for this DIY piece, paint small snakes around your face and even eyes if you'd like. Grey eyeshadow and maybe even a little detailing of cracks just below the eyes will take you a long way.
For the costume itself, black and green would be best. Whether that is a dress or a green top and black pants (with snake detailing if you have any) it is all in your hands. You could even copy the Loki look with a green robe draped around you like a dress. Anything works.
Disney fans, depending on the character, you can be easily recognisable as your favourite princess, prince or anything in between. Take Tinkerbell. All you need is a green dress and wings. White pom poms for your shoes if you’d like but that is optional.
For the wings, you can make or buy them and if you choose not to go for pom poms, that will be your only cost in this outfit.
Makeup just needs as much pixie dust (glitter/ eyeshadow) as you want around your eyes. Sparkly green eyeshadow is the way to go with a bit of gold glitter in your inner eye corner and on cheekbones and other areas you would usually highlight.
There you have it ladies and gentleman. DIYing your perfect Halloween costume will keep costs low and still have you looking fabulous! So open your closets and get ready for spooky season. Happy Halloween!
