Never Have I Ever been so curious to see what happens to Devi the high school girl with terrible boy luck. Season 4 will be on Netflix on the 8th of June so don’t worry! You have plenty of time to binge it if you haven’t watched it yet.

Never Have I Ever is a comedy, coming of age drama about all the ups and downs of being a teenager. The cultural element embedded in the show is also lovely to see, because for Indian girls it is almost an entirely different experience, especially if you have strict parents and a moustache that would match your dads if you didn’t wax it off once a week!

Don’t worry, not all of it is embarrassing (although most of it is). The show gives some cultural value to Indian celebrations and how some Indian families may function.

I will say that the series tries very hard to be relatable and it shows. While some parts are relatable because we all went through the same thing at some point, some terribly awkward moments will simply make you cringe in your seats.

Devi lives with her mum in America and her cousin from India. The show begins with her fathers death and how Devi and her mother deal with that, which ,to say the least, is not well.
The balance between drama and comedy is very well done through most of the series but sometimes it loses that balance and screams second hand embarrassment.

Of course, our main character Devi just has to have a crush on the hottest boy in school and of course, she is one of the least popular girls until she changes her dress sense. It is a classic old movie trick of the popularity system in schools only ever being skin deep, except for the boy who has always seen Devi as she is and is starting to realise he likes her anyway. Lots of boy problems, family problems, friend problems, popularity problems and puberty problems can almost make you pity Devi. Almost.

She is immature and disrespectful and selfish to the point that it will be annoying but she is broken and a part of you won’t be able to help but to feel for her. She has been through so much, but so has everyone else and she never thinks of them because she is so stuck in her own bubble, like many teenagers might be.

It does have its funny moments and you might relate to the show or you might not, but I will say that it is a great binge if you have nothing to watch on Netflix so get to watching and figure out for yourselves if it is cringe worthy or just dramatic.
