Loki is a god, you’ll do best not to forget that. Only this time, the Norse god is being torn from one point in time to another.
Last season we saw the god of mischief in a way we had never seen him before. No longer a hero, not a villain but an anti- hero. The king of morally grey invaded our screens on Disney + and made us see how complex Loki really is as a character. Loki season 1 started right in the middle of the action. It picks up from when Loki vanished with the Tesseract in Avengers: Endgame. He appears in a desert where the TVA captures him and tries to figure out what to do with him. Mobius thinks it is best that Loki helps the TVA to find one of Loki’s more problematic variants who we later find out is known as Sylvie.
Any of this ringing a bell? This small summary was only the very beginning of Loki season 1. From here there was a whole lot of adventure, survival and the story line only got thicker and more intense with each episode.
Season 1 was packed with action and plot after plot for each episode. It was all about survival, destiny, and love. Loki was the second best MCU TV show to WandaVision. Through what many call ‘Marvel’s slump’ Loki has managed to avoid it, until now. Although perhaps that is not fair to say, as this season only had one true problem. Dear reader, this is not a critique of any of the actors who have been absolutely sensational this season. Instead it is a comment on the pace of the show. Each episode seems to only tell us a snippet of information that we can only hope will be uncovered in the next episode. As the ending of any Marvel show holds true, the last 5 minutes of any episode this season will keep you hooked enough to want to keep watching. But in the rest of those 40 ish minutes you will sit and wonder when will this episode get to the point?
The plot itself is brilliant. It has given Tom Hiddlestone the opportunity to get to know Loki even better and you best believe he really did. In season 2 Loki is faced with challenges that involve the end of everything, and he has taken it upon himself to save it. What is interesting is how Loki’s variant Sylvie reacts to this in comparison. They are ultimately the same person and yet they have two entirely different reactions to what is happening around them. Remember a few things about the god of mischief, they are entirely selfish and narcissistic. So why does Loki want to save the TVA whereas Sylvie couldn’t care less? I won’t answer that question for you so you’ll just have to watch the show. The humour is timeless as ever and the Loki and Mobius duo have only become all that more loveable, with the introduction of new characters. The universe is falling to bits but this season is no longer chaotic and busy. Instead, we get to see old characters develop into their own, rather than being a puppet to the TVA. We see Renslayer, B15, Miss Minutes and some more show us who they really are. Where their true intentions lie and for what purpose. This season is different and yes the pace of it is a part of that but I suppose the pace of the show allows us to get to know each character so much better than we used to. Will we ever know who to really trust? Some choices are obvious but that decision is for you to make. Everyone has an agenda.
If you can get past how slow this season is in comparison to last, it is definitely worth the watch. But if you want to know what season of Loki is better, I’d have to say the first.
